St. Mary's Catholic Primary School

St. Mary's Catholic Primary School

A place of educational excellence with Christ at the centre

School Recognised For Outstanding Achievement in Reading.

St Mary's has received an important letter from the Minister of Education.

The school's results, as published on 13 December, show that 100 per cent of your pupils reached or exceeded the expected standard in reading at the end of Key Stage 2. This means that for achievement in reading, St Mary's Catholic Primary School is in the top 1 per cent of primary schools in the country.

This pass success is due to the small class sizes and the intensity in which we teach reading. We have this year reviewed our approach to the teaching of reading and introduced a new scheme called Read Write Inc. This enables us to teach the children in targeted small groups. This then keeps the sizes small throughout the whole of the school. We at St Mary’s excite the children about their reading and writing through author visits, creative writing workshops, Library Loan scheme and much, much more.

A little more information about Read Write INC:

We recognise that reading opens the door to all learning and the more a child learns the more a child wants to find out. With this in mind we have reviewed our current phonics programme and reading scheme and made the decision to improve it!

Our aim for our school is that: ‘Every child can read’

What is RWI phonics?

Read Write Inc (RWI) is a phonics based programme which helps children learn to read whilst also developing a wide range of vocabulary and encouraging a love of stories. It was developed by Ruth Miskin and more information on this can be found at www.ruthmiskinliteracy.com .

Read write Inc is a teaching programme which means:

  • Children in the early years learn to read confidently and fluently.
  • Older children with reading difficulties make fast progress.
  • Children with specific learning difficulties learn to read.
